FBM Bike Company

After Woodward Camp I wanted to get away from the Action Sports world. I was sick of youth culture and thought I wanted to do something, design related, but focused on a more adult audience. Then my wife decided to leave me and I tumbled into state of depression.

As I was not feeling strong and able to carve out a new life for myself, I returned to the BMX bicycling industry and worked for a friend’s small bike company. FBM had an image as the “bad boy” outcasts in a world of outcasts. I sort of thought of them as the Harley Davidson of BMX.

It was a weird time for me, but again, looking back, we had some fun, and I’m thankful to have been a part of it. My friend and I share a sense of irreverence that shows up in this work. The “Birds of a Feather” theme was his idea, I came up with the imagery.

My friend Steve is an artist and he makes lots of funny painting/drawings, which I talked him into using in the promotional materials. This and the following few images are from a small catalog I put together that I think does a pretty good job of conveying the soul of the company. At least it does for me. I’m still happy with this.

A bird themed belt buckle that I designed.

A sticker set I designed for a friend’s pro-model frame. The dog on the sticker was Curtis, the head welder’s dog. Curtis bit me once.

Steve, my friend and co-owner of the company, worked on a series of irreverently funny ads together. One of his thematic ideas was the concept “Bikes with character, characters with bikes.” These ads represent that concept and the company as a whole. They make me smile.
